CAATSA 

The Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, is federal law of USA which imposed various sanctions on IRAN, N.KOREA AND RUSSIA. This law was passed on 27th JULY 2017 with a majority of 98-2 in the senate.

PROVISIONS:–

1. IRAN 

For Iran it was imposed for countering the Iran’s destabilising activities Act of 2017.

sanctions against:-

(a) Iran’s ballistic missile or weapons of mass destruction.

(b) State and Trade with Iran for military equipment.

(c) Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. and affiliated foreign persons .

2 RUSSIA

The act was for countering Russian influence in Europe and Eurasia Act of 2017.

sanctions against :-

(a) Cyber security

(b) Crude oil projects

(c) Financial institutions

(d) Corruption

(e) Human rights abuse

(f) Transactions with Russian defence or intelligence sectors

(g) Export pipelines

(h) Arms transfer to Syria

3. NORTH KOREA

This act was imposed for countering Korean intervention and  modernisation of sanctions act.

Sanctions against:-

(a) North Korea cargo and shipping

(b) goods produced in whole or part by North Korea – labour

(c) Foreign persons that employ North Korean forced labourers.

RECENT TALKS 

Th USA has reiterated its position and asked all their allies and partners, including India to stop all transactions with Russia. Since, India’s planned jet fighter deal with Russia is of estimated 18,500 cr. and this can lead India to face sanctions for purchasing S-400 TRIUMPH MISSILE defence system from Russia under CAATSA.
