DELTA PLUS : VARIANT OF COVID-19
What is delta plus?
- The Delta Plus variant is the mutated version of the Delta variant, which was earlier found in India. The Delta variant thus far been found in 85 countries.
- It has been wreaking havoc across the world, with increased transmissibility and resistance to some drugs and therapies.
- It spreads 60% faster than the alpha variant.
The Delta Plus, or Delta-AY.1 variant is sub-lineage of Delta variant, a mutated version of the B.1.617.2 variant or strain. This strain is characterised by the K417N mutation within the spike protein of the SARS-CoV2 virus that causes the Covid-19 disease. The K417N mutation has been associated with “immune escape”, which means that the virus is less susceptible to — or less responsive to — any drug therapy. The delta variant was responsible for the deadly 2nd wave of covid-19.
The above picture shows the binding of the virus with the host cell. Here ACE2 stands for Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2. It is an enzyme attached to the membrane of cells located in the intestines, kidney, testis, gallbladder, and heart.
