INDIA METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT (IMD)

THE INDIA METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT IS AN AGENCY UNDER THE MINISTRY OF EARTH SCIENCES OF THE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA.

Its main objective is to observe meteorological changes, weather forecasting and seismology.

It was founded by GOVERNMENT OF INDIAN in 1875.

The headquarter is located in the capital city of INDIA that is NEW DELHI.

ORGANISATION STRUCTURE  IN IMD:

  • For the higher administration and technical control,  there are 6 regional meteorological center each under a Deputy Director General with headquarters at:
  1. Mumbai
  2. Chennai
  3. New Delhi
  4. Calcutta
  5. Nagpur
  6. Guwahati.
  • Under the administration control, there are various types of operational units such as:
  1. Meteorological Centers at state capitals
  2. Forecasting Offices
  3. Agrometeorological Advisory Service Centers
  4. Flood Meteorological Offices
  5. Cyclone Warning Centers.
  • Additionally, there are different division to deal with special subjects. They are: –
    • Agricultural Meteorology
    • Civil Aviation
    • Climatology
    • Hydrometeorology
    • Instrumentation
    • Meteorological Telecommunication
    • Regional Specialised Meteorological Centre
    • Positional Astronomy
    • Satellite Meteorology
    • Seismology
    • Training

Recently, Ministry of Earth Sciences launches mobile App “Mausam” for IMD

  • The app was launced on 27 july, founding day of the IMD
  • Users are able to access observed weather, forecasts and weather events.
  • This mobile app is available on Play Store as well as on Appstore.

ABOUT IMD SATELLITE :

There are two operational meteorological satellites; INSAT-3D & INSAT-3DR carrying six channel imager for imaging the earth in visible (0.55-0.75um),SWIR (1.55-1.70um) of resolution 1KmX1 Km, MIR (3.80-4.00um),TIR-1 (10.30-11.30um),TIR-2(11.50-12.50um) of resolution 4KmX4Km and WV (6.50-7.10um) of resolution 8KmX 8Km. and ninteen channel sounder consisting of seven channels of LWIR (14.71-12.02um), five channels of MWIR (11.03-6.51um), six channels of SWIR (4.572-3.74um) and one channel of visible (0.695um) each of resolution 10X10 Km scan the atmosphere for derivation of profiles.
