The Indian Navy operates three Commands, each under the control of a Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief in the rank of Vice Admiral
The Commands:
The Eastern and the Western Naval Commands are ‘Operational Commands’, and exercise control over operations in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea respectively. They have fleets commanded by Rear Admiral, namely the Western Fleet, based at Mumbai and the Eastern Fleet, based at Visakhapatnam and also have a Commodore Commanding Submarine. Under each Command, there are various Naval Officer-in-Charges (NOICs) who are responsible for the Local Naval Defence of ports under their respective jurisdictions.
The Southern Naval Command is the Training Command and includes the Flag Officer Sea Training
Additionally, The Andaman & Nicobar Command at Port Blair is a joint reporting to the Chief of Integrated Service command (CISC), New Delhi. The Andaman & Nicobar Command is the only joint Navy, Army, Air Force command set up in 2001 to safeguard Southeast Asia and the Strait of Malacca. The Local Naval Defence is the responsibility of the Naval Officer-in-Charge at the Lakshadweep group of islands.
