PROJECT TIGER
- As the Bengal Tiger is the National animal of India . The first Tiger census conducted in 1972 in the country . According to this census the Tiger population had dwindled into 1827 from an estimated 55000 at the turn of the century .The current Prime Minister Indira Gandhi realized and took some solid steps to increase the population of the National animal .
- On 1st April 1973 a wildlife conservation project was given name Project Tiger .
- Project Tiger is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate change, Government of India .
OBJECTIVES
- The main aim of the scheme is to ensure a viable population of tiger in India .
MANAGEMENT
- Administered by – NTCA (National Tiger Conservation Authority ).
- In the early years of Project Tiger there was only 9 Tiger reserves involved in this project .Now the number has increased to 50 Tiger reserves in our 18 states .
- New Tiger reserves were created in country based on ” core buffer ” strategy.
Core area : free of all human activities
Buffer area : multipurpose use area
- Area covered by Tiger reserves – 2.21%
- The monitoring system M-STriPES (Monitoring System for Tiger’s Intensive Protection and Ecological Status ).
IMPORTANT POINTS
- India does not support Captive(kept as a prisoner ) breeding of Tigers .
- According to Wildlife protection Act 1972 , tourism to core areas should be banned .
- 70 percent of the world’s tiger population found in India.
- In the 2014 the Tiger count was 2226 but according to the 2018 census the population of tigers has increased to nearly 3000
States with the most Tigers :
- Madhya Pradesh – 526
- Karnataka – 524
- Uttrakhand – 442
